The collective began at Interlochen in the summer of 2023, where Tyler Shaver and Jaime García-Añoveros met after discovering a shared interest in poststructuralist philosophy and experimental music. As young composers, they both had trouble obtaining performances of their work. Rather than wait to be programmed by someone else, they decided to become the programmers: to form an organization that would present public concerts of new work by composers their own age, often performed by the composers themselves. They named it after Gilles Deleuze. Both owned Emerson Quartet recordings, realized the quartet was named for Ralph Waldo Emerson, and decided their own group should be named for a philosopher too.
What began as DIY concerts has since become an organization that brings composers and performers in from across North America for a rehearsal weekend. The collective is now run by Tyler Shaver, Jaime García-Añoveros, Tyge Thomas, and Wes Coffin.
Deleuze New Music Collective is deliberately not dedicated to a single style. Its programs have run from solo violin to voice-and-electronics, from four-hands piano to staged settings with libretto, and it programs across generations, levels of experience, aesthetics, and backgrounds. What ties these pieces together is the community built from sharing art.
